The branch of medicine that deals with the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs.
Pulmonary medicine deals with many diseases and conditions, including: ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, lung transplants, occupational lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary tuberculosis, sarcoidosis of the lungs, and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).
Pulmonary medicine is also sometimes called pulmonology which is the science concerned with the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the lungs.
Faculty members are board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. We also have physicians who specialize in interventional pulmonary medicine. Members of the faculty work closely with physicians in cardiothoracic surgery and pathology to provide comprehensive care.
Clinical Programs
A large number of clinical programs have been established to address the diversity of the diseases and disorders of the respiratory tract. The Section provides consultative care to all adult inpatient services and primary care in the Intensive Care Units at pioneer Hospital. It also runs a large outpatient program out of the Chest Clinic that includes subspecialty programs in a variety of chest disorders.
